This year, Red Bull Music Academy and Movement Electronic Music Festival 2013 are combining forces for an immersive, exploratory experience honoring the multidisciplinary artists of Detroit. Synesthesia will explore how seven artists who work in both fine art and electronic music during a three-day showcase of full circle creation, cultivation and abstract presentation. disciplin

The intersection of art and music will happen over three days on Tuesday, May 21; Wednesday, May 22; and Thursday, May 23 at Red Bull House of Art in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market. Each day collections of new and existing visual bodies of work influenced by the music each artist creates will be on display. In addition, each artist will be perform an array of abstract, live and DJ-based sets. The seven artists include Tadd Mullinix (Dabrye / Ghostly International), Jeff Risk (RBMA alumnus), renowned producer Sterling Toles, Zachary Shigeto Saginaw (Ghostly International), Benjamin Kenjiro Saginaw (Red Bull House of Art alumnus), Ron Zakrin (Goudron) and Matthew Hawtin (Plus 8 Records).

“This is a full circle showcase,” says curator Matt Eaton. “It’s hard to survive in a city as simply one thing. Synesthesia honors and celebrates the multidisciplinary aspect of most artists here.”

Synesthesia will be held in the days leading up to the world-renowned Movement Electronic Music Festival 2013. This year, Movement and Red Bull took their relationship to the next level by moving the Red Bull Music Academy stage from the pyramid in Hart Plaza to the main stage in celebration of Red Bull Music Academy 2013 being hosted in New York City. 

For those familiar with RBMA but will not get a chance to explore the month long celebration in the Big Apple, many of the lectures, live recordings and music collaborations will be showing in conjunction with Synesthesia. Patrons of the celebration will experience the latest collaborations out of 2013 Academy particpants while also enjoying the best of past Academy artists, lecturers and thought leaders in the industry from screenings throughout the Eastern Market Gallery. Popular series such as HASHTAGS and RBMA World Tour will be streaming as well as other Red Bull Music Academy content. 

The three-day series will take place each night from 8pm to 11pm. Interviews with participating artists and producers will be available upon requests.

Sid Vaga returns to Nickodemus’ Wonderwheel Recordings with another 12″ full of exotic deep house vibes sure to light up dance floors everywhere. It’s an impressive follow-up to his genuinely well-received ‘Brazuca’ single from earlier in the year. On the A side, Sid delivers ‘Na Na Yé’, a driving cut with a pulsing bass line and hypnotic African chant that pushes the tune forward before getting flipped into a percussive section alongside deep and subtle synths.

On the flip ‘Manouche’ can be found, a late night house tune with psychedelic Balkan guitars and swirling Gypsy vocal samples punctuating the track.
